Hello William,
Death certificates are located in the White Pine County Recorder's office - (775)289-4567.

This is a touchy subject right now. The White Pine County Recorder is refusing to allow anyone to see ANY birth or death certificates. They made the mistake of allowing a birth certificate of a nationally known person to be copied that should not have been and the information was published.

The State website says that any death certificates prior to 1911 must be obtained from the county in Nevada where the death occured. Puts researchers into a Catch 22! You might want to contact the Nevada Division of Vital Statistics and see if they can resolve this misunderstanding and have the WP Recorder copy the certificate for you. If you do not need a certified copy, the charge should be $1.00 per page.

Another option would be the obituaries in the newspaper. To date, I have been able to use this method for my genealogy clients without complaining to the state. If I can be of assistance, please email me direct. (Just click on my name above.)

William Neil McGill of Ely, NV was my great-grandfather. He married Mary ("Mollie") Fouts, who was the daughter of Frances Yates. I am fascinated with Frances and have been researching her ancestors. Her maiden name was Peters. She was born in Missouri, and her family moved to California in the 1850s. She married John Fouts when very young, by whom she had two dauthers. I don't know John's fate; she married William A. Yates. Sadly, Yates committed suicide in Idaho in 1871, so Frances and her two daughters Molly and Julia, moved to Nevada.

The parents of Frances Yates were Richard and Elizabeth Peters. Her sister Catherine ("Katie") married Abner Cleveland, and her brother Richard lived in Spring Valley. Her mother is buried in the Ely Cemetery under the name Elizabeth E. Hill.

I have been trying to discover Elizabeth Hill's maiden name, which may possibly be found on the death certificates of her children (Frances Yates, Katie Cleveland, and Richard Peters.), or on her own death certificate (died 17 Dec 1891).

I would appreciate any help in finding where these certificates might be found.

I am looking for some help with finding information on my anscestors who lived in White Pines/Ely for years. I have found 2 of my anscestors in the cemetary listings. I thank you for taking the time to put this on the internet. I was wondering if you could tell me if there was a newspaper in 1919 that might list ob's. And if there is if there is any way I might get a copy of it. And who to contact. I am looking for more
information on Arnold and Hermina Spitz, and Joseph and Emelia Radspieler. If anyone could help me I would really apprecitate any information That is available. Joseph is buried in Ely, Died 1919, Arnold died in 1934 in Ely and his wife Hermina died in 1952. I have been told that Emelia (Emily) remarried a man with the last name of Patterson after her husband past away.

My Great Grandfather aslo lived in the area his name was Julius Warsany. He married my Great Grandmother Phillippina Spitz in Ely. They also had two children there. I would love it if there might be anyone who would have info. on them as well

Thank you in advance for your help and for this discussion board to post on.

Regarding the mention of the first cemetery in WPC in Effie O. Read's book "White Pine Lang Syne" (messages of Jan 4, Feb 1, Feb 2 and Mar 2, 2000). This information may be marginal, but describes the most likely site near Mineral/Lane City. It is from Elliott, Russell R. (no date, my guess is 1956). "History of Nevada Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corporation." University of Nevada (unpublished), p. 108. I thought that perhaps the references cited could lead to further information on a cemetery. It's probably a long-shot.

Professor Elliott is writing about the Kimbley pit:
"To get at this ore, located in Ingersoll Canyon near Lane City, a tremendous amount of waste had to be removed. Kennecott officials called in the Isbell Construction Company to do the job. On September 1, 1950, Nevada Mines Division and Isbell signed a contract for the removal of 15,098,000 tons of waste and 3,317,000 tones of ore. Removal of the waste, supposed to start November 1, but delayed until November 6, was to take two years. Within months, the huge earth moving machinery of the Isbell Company had created a tremendous dump at the head of Ingersoll Canyon that seemed ready at any moment to overflow onto the main highway nearby."

References cited for the above:

Ely Record, October 6, 1950;

Would much appreciate contact with anyone who has any knowledge of our ancestors who lived in East Ely in the early 1900s, two of which are currently buried in the Ely Cemetery. We'd very much like to know if anything is still legible on the gravestones of James Francis Drysdale and Mrs. Effie Drysdale, both buried in the "Old-4" section. We'd also like to contact anyone with access to civil records, old newspaper articles, Nevada Northern Rwy records, etc, who can help us put together some of the details of their lives in Ely/East Ely. Reasonable fees accepted.

James Francis Drysdale was the son of Thomas and Martha Drysdale of New Albany, IN. He was born 12/19/1830 (or 1835) in New Albany, and he grew up on a his parent's farm. James became an engineer on the Monon RR, and lived most of his working life in Bloomington, IN. He married Katurah Spencer there and they raised 5 children: Charles A., b.1866, Joseph H., b.1868, Effie M., b.1869, Alfred T., b.1876, and Thomas T., Sr., b.1880. Sons Alfred Tennyson and Thomas Townsend, Sr. left Bloomington about 1895. Alfred married Mable Morgan in December 1901, and Thomas married Effie Warner in November 1904. Alfred/Mable (with daughters Ruth M. and Minnie E.) and Thomas/Effie moved to East Ely about 1906. Alfred was a RR engineer there, and we assume Thomas was a musician. Thomas/Effie had daughter Elizabeth in December 1906. Effie died a young woman in East Ely on November 3, 1908 from a blood clot on her brain (obituary in Ely Mining Record 11/7/08). James F. and Katurah came to East Ely in 1908. Alfred/Mable divorced in May 1910, and she moved to Durango, CO. Thomas T., Sr. also moved to CO in 1910 and he spent the rest of his life there. James F. died of a stroke on 8/18/1911 in East Ely, and is buried in the Ely Cemetery with Effie.

Mrs. Isbell was a huge supporter of the WP Museum too, I understand. They both must have been fine folks. Thanks for the info and please keep adding to the forum. It benefits us all to hear from those who "were there" and "knew them" when.

I will be quiet for a few days for a rest & Rec time.

June--It was the Isbell (no "O") Construction Company, owned and operated by C. V. Isbell (I think those were his initials). "C. V." came to Nevada with a borrowed truck in the late twenties or early thirties and started hauling for construction jobs. Eventually, he built several of the highways in Nevada after WWII and had contracts with Kennecott and others for mining operations in Nevada, Washington, Arizona, Utah and, perhaps, even South America. He truly was a wonderful person, to my family, at least. When my father (Dr. Walter Frolich)was deathly ill in Ely in the winter of 1950 (after emergency surgery in San Francisco that summer), Isbell had his personal planes at the airports in San Francisco, Reno and Salt Lake City, waiting for the weather to clear at any of those sites so Isbell could either fly into Ely with one of my father's surgeon friends to do the surgery pop so desperately needed, or fly pop out to where his surgeons were. One surgeon drove all the way from San Francisco non-stop and another from Salt Lake City, through snowstorms, to reach Ely in time to save his life. A month later, pop had not fully recovered and had to go to Salt Lake City for further attention. "C.V." again flew into Ely, picked up pop, and headed for SLC, letting pop fly the plane part of the way to keep him conscious the whole time. The ambulance and a police escort met the plane at the end of the SLC air strip. Believe me, those were tense times for the Frolichs.

Sorry Warren. My mistake for jumping to conclusions that you knew. Dang it. Well if anybody knows the information, many would sure like to know the location of Ely's first cemetery. We know the Ely City Cemetery has been located where it is since at least 1898 because there is a picture of it with many graves showing in that year. But perhaps bodies are still interred in the orginal cemetery and it would be nice if we knew where exactly that was.

June;just found your .02.02.2000 msg.Must be some misunderstanding.I never to my knowledge made any comment as to the location of the ely cemetary and the waste dumps at lane city .In about 1951 I worked for Isbell at the Lane city pit operation drove an old f model Yuk (Sp) truck. When ever I visit WPC and visit the area I can still see the dump that was new in the 1950's now brush has started to cover some of the area. The following summer I worked for isbell again at the Kimberly pit site was lucky drove a brand new T model truck
it was big for the period but small by todays equipment.

Wow Warren! Could you draw a map for me where the one near Lane City and the others and mail it to me? I doubt the first cemetery for Ely would have been at the pit though, don't you? The Lane City site sounds maybe close enough to the new town and Mineral (Lane) was the first settlement in the area, pre Ely 1878.

I am working on a series of books about the history of Cherry Creek and the surrounding
area. I'm close to completing one major effort on the first 10 years.

One of the areas I need personal stories and photographs is the period from the 1920s to the 1960s. Amazingly enough, I've found several ex-Cherry Creekers in my area around Sacramento and even here in Vacaville who lived there in the 1930s. I'm in the process of interviewing them now.

Unfortunately, so far, there are few photographs in their possession.

I've been through the White Pine Historical Sociey's files with Mark Henderson already to some extent but hope to spend some more time there

OK Folks.. I need some help here determining where the Isobel Construction Co created their overburden dump.

"The Foster Brothers were buried in White Pine's first cemetery along with George Lamb, Bill and George Davis, Jim Murry, one of two brothers whom Murry Creek and Murry Canyon were named for, a man named Benefield, and others. Perhaps this first cemetery was located under the overburden dump created by the Isobel Construction Company in the 1950's. White Pine Lang Syne by Effie O. Read page 263, 264"
