Cherry Creek, NV

Dr. Tufford. Dr. Tufford was an early physician of Cherry Creek. He later practiced in Ward, NV and then in Taylor, NV where he remained throughout the life of that camp.

Dr. Rockman part of 188. Dr. Rockman only stayed for a few months before leaving the area.

Dr. J. D. Campbell  1881 - ? Dr. Campbell moved west from Ann Arbor in the spring of 1881 and opened his first medical office at Cherry Creek. He moved to Taylor, NV during its boom where he married Miss Maggie Leahigh, eldest daughter of Mrs. Stephen Tucker of Taylor. The couple moved to Pioche in the late 1880's. Dr. Campbell served one term as an assemblyman from White Pine County and later was elected State Senator several times from Lincoln County, NV.

Dr. Ascher ca 1901 / 1902 - several years. Dr. Ascher later moved to Humboldt County, then to Washoe County, NV where he was elected to the State Senate.

Ely, NV

Dr. H. B. Cowen

Dr. M. J. Davis 1888 - Dr. Davis may have been the first Doctor to locate in Ely, NV. Ely citizens pledged Dr. Davis $100.00 per month in addition to his normal fees to keep a physician in town.

Dr. G. Lyman Richardson (eventually became the superintendent of the NV State mental hospital at Sparks, NV)

Dr. Rodney H. Richardson 1889 - Dr. Richardson was noted for being available at all times of the day or night to answer a call whether the person was able to pay for his services or not. The Dr. promoted Ely, and was rewarded financially during the copper boom from the results of his real estate and mining interests.

McGill - Kennecott Copper Mine Hospital - McGill, NV

 

Hamilton, NV

Dr. Seldon Allen McMeans  Dec 1868 - 1870 practiced in Hamilton, Treasure City, Eberhardt and Shermantown areas. While here, he was interested in mining. He died in Reno, NV, age 70 July 31, 1876, and was buried in Virginia City, NV. He was a California pioneer, having arrived there in 1849 and at one time served as State Treasurer and as Senator from El Dorado county. Dr. McMeans was born in Dandridge, TN July 1806. He left a wife, son and daughter, all residing in Santa Rosa, CA.

Dr. Thoma (Thomas?) 1874 - 1876 (later practiced in Eureka, NV for some years, then in Reno, NV where he died in early 1900's)

Dr. Henry Hager 1878 (later practiced in several towns in White Pine County, NV. He settled in Ruby Valley, Elko county where he practiced there.

Dr. H. S. Herrick practiced in Hamilton for several years. He owned a drug store and had the contract to operate the County Hospital at Hamilton for several years.

Kimberly Hospital - Ruth, NV

 

Privately Run Hospitals

Dillion's Hospital located in 1907 in Murry Canyon on Canyon Street between Sage and 1st Street. By 1912 the building had become a boarding or rooming house for many years.

Behrman's Maternity Hospital - McGill, NV
Mrs. Heber Behrman, an excellent nurse, operated a Maternity Hospital in McGill where the physicians delivered the babies. The McGill establishment operated during the 1930’s and had six beds. Patients were charged 5.00 per day. Margaret C. Windous, her midwife mother operated, a small Maternity Hospital in Ely.

Windous Maternity Hospital - Ely, NV
Mrs. Margaret C. Windous, was a popular midwife of the Lund and Preston area. She is believed to have delivered over 900 babies in White Pine County. She and her husband and 10 children lived on a ranch near Preston. When she became a widow, she operated a small Maternity Hospital in Ely.


Steptoe Hospital - Ely, NV

Dr. R. A. Bowdle, Chief Surgeon for the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company in 1916 - died 1943

Dr. Walter H. Frolich Late 1920’s to 1954
 Dr. Frolich became the Chief Surgeon for the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company / KCC Steptoe Valley Hospital on the death of Dr. Bowdle in 1943 and continued in that position until 1954. He was married to Marie. 

Dr. Ontie “Hovie” Hovenden  1917 - ca 1947
Dr. Ontie “Hovie” Hovenden practiced thirty years at the McGill emergency hospital from 1917 to age 75 when he retired. Dr. Hovenden moved to Carson City after retirement with the copper mine. He died in Carson City, NV November 9, 1979. Dr. Hovenden married Lillie, a nurse at the Steptoe Hospital where they met and had a daughter, Mary Lou Hovenden Noel and a son Thomas. Dr. Hovenden was remembered for his no nonsense demeanor and his rough, sometimes caustic bedside manner, with a great sense of humor.

Dr. Ririe has the distinction of having the newest, most modern hospital in Ely, NV named for him.

Dr. Noah Smernoff 1929 - 1953
Noah Smernoff was born December 31, 1904, in Denver, Colorado to Russian immigrants.  Smernoff married Josephine Elbert July 6, 1933 in Ely, NV and they had two daughters, their first infant who died at childbirth and Ann. Susan was adopted in 1943.  Dr. Smernoff came to White Pine County, NV in 1929 to practice Industrial Medicine at the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company for over 23 years before moving to Reno, NV in 1954. There he founded the Ralston Medical Clinic and practiced there until he retired in 1978. Dr Smernoff was still living in Reno Feb 2001.

 Dr. Smernoff was assigned to work at the McGill emergency hospital located in “Middle Town” on November 15, 1929, under Dr. Hovenden and he was to relieve other doctors at the Ruth hospital and the Steptoe Valley Hospital as needed. Smernoff worked in McGill for twelve years, until in 1943, he was asked to serve at the Steptoe Hospital as assistant chief surgeon when Dr. Frolich replaced deceased Chief Surgeon Dr. Bowdle.

Treasure City, NV

Dr. Willard 1868 - 
Dr. Willard was the first doctor in Treasure City. Between mining and his practice, he acquired a comfortable fortune but lost it when he was sued for malpractice. As he aged, his reputation as a good physician suffered.
