This is the only known photo of early day Ward.

"Like a tin can, a mining camp often lies where it is thrown," wrote an early editor about mining camps.  "The town of Ward sprang up in an unfortunate position on the shelf of a hill; the north side of the main street was ten feet higher than the south side. Steptoe Valley is beyond the town to the right." (White Pine Museum)
