White Pine County, Nevada Soldiers Killed in Action
The White Pine War Memorial lists 124 names of those White Pine County residents who gave their lives for their country. The memorial is located on the right front of the White Pine County Court House grounds in Ely, Nevada. The simple but impressive monument was formally dedicated on Memorial Day, May 26, 1996, in front of approximately 300 observers. During the ceremonies, four jets from Nellis Air Force Base performed a "fly-over" to honor the county's "Gold Star" fallen heroes.
Speakers for the dedication ceremony were:
Jack Fleming of Seattle, Washington, Ely Daily Times columnist of "Copper
Times," who encouraged the community to build a tribute to the area's war dead.
Bill Flangas of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Ely native, who led the War Memorial Task Force who
raised the $43,000 needed to build it.
Neal Corbert of Modesto, California, and Ely native, shared his memories of personally
knowing many of the World War II victims.
George G. Tate, the architect and McGill native, spoke of his experience while designing
the monument.
Rev. Dale Miller read the roster of the Philippine Insurrection and World War I victims.
Father Timothy Wehn recognized the victims of World War II.
Bishop Robert Walker named the victims of Korea and Vietnam.
Father Caesar Caviglia recited Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
The Nevada State Army National Guard fired a 21-gun salute and high school students, Kyle
Krch and Lee Robertson each played the sad, haunting notes of "Taps" to end the
ceremony.
