Helen |
T. |
Helen T. Marvis was born in Manari, Arcadia, Greece in 1898. She immigrated to the United States in 1926. Her brothers' Gus and William had a friend, Peter Marvis, who was looking for a wife. They arranged a marriage between Helen and Peter, even though the two had never met. After unsuccessfully attempting to enter the country illegally, Helen came in legally because of her pending marriage to Peter. They were happily married for 28 years, before Peter's untimely death in 1954. Helen had one daughter, Dorothy Marvis, who was born in 1926. She lived most of her life on Tippett Ranch in eastern White Pine County. She was a wonderful cook, hard worker, and absolutely honest. She moved to Santa Barbara, California in 1970 to live with her daughter. She passed away there in May, 1985. Source: CAPT Steve Hull gonavy@nvbell.net |

4 Aug 1887 in Verbena, Greece - 25 Nov 1954. Peter Marvis immigrated to McGill, Nevada around 1907. Eventually he became the owner of a general store. When World War I broke out he volunteered for duty at the age of 29. He served in the 42nd Division in France and was wounded in action. He was very proud of his service to his adopted country. From the early 1930's he lived on Tippett Ranch in eastern White Pine County with his wife and brother-in-law, William Sellas. He was known for his sense of humor and his hard work. He and his wife had one daughter, Dorothy, born on November 26, 1926. Tragically, he fell off a ladder and hit his head. A few days later he passed away. Source: CAPT Steve Hull gonavy@nvbell.net |
